I was sitting in a restaurant this past week, when I overheard a mom talking to her teenage son about him not responding to her texts. She asked "Are you even getting my texts?" If you find yourself asking this same question, you should encourage your family members to turn on read receipts for their iMessages!

In the Settings app, navigate to Messages and then turn on the option Send Read Receipts. This will send an acknowledgment when a message is read in the Messages app, that will appear to the sender in their Messages app.

While you're already in the Messages settings, you may also want to enable Send as SMS which will use SMS when an iMessage send attempt fails. This can be good for sending messages in areas of poor signal quality, like the back of a grocery store or a crowded stadium.
